Lurk

Lurk (Nissiian: Aēru; Loringian: Aeeru) is the younger of the two constituent nations of Mekniy-Lurk, founded on 25 June 2011. Its culture is shaped by nature, liberty and political thought; its landscape — hills, wetlands, rivers, meadows — is treated as a national symbol in its own right.

Name

The name Lurk comes from the closest English approximation to the local name of the Lurk Hills, the territory where the nation was originally claimed.

Territory

Lurk is located within Prague. Its mainland covers the Lurk Hills area — uninhabited fields, hills and wetlands. The main population centres are the capital Ravensburg and Redwood City, both exclaves from the Hills proper. Lurk also held a claim in Antarctica (Palmer Land, approved by the Antarctic Micronational Union), and the Lurkish Antarctic Zone remains a federal state on paper.

Lurk’s highest point is Maul’s Peak at 260 m. The largest river is the Nek (Czech: Rokytka), flowing through several lakes before joining the Vltava. Lurk is warmer than Mekniy on average due to its urban setting.

History

Lurk’s prehistory goes to 2005, when Alex White’s family put together an informal one-day nation in the Redwood City area. In 2008, White participated in a friend’s geofictional project — renamed geography, a Czech-adjacent constructed language — elements of which persisted into the real Lurk.

Lurk was formally established on 25 June 2011 as LurkSAR, a socialist state in the Lurk Hills. It appeared first on the YouTube micronational community. The day after founding, contact was made with the micronation of Flatland; through Flatland, Lurk reached MicroWiki that summer. LurkSAR reformed into the Lurk Republic within a day.

The Lurk Federation followed the collapse of the YouTube community, annexing Acrest and reaching its greatest territorial extent. A new flag, a Germanic cultural direction and Lurk’s first (and shortest) constitution came in January 2012. The abolition of the President’s office in favour of the Prime Minister was followed by deep inactivity and a long run of short-lived unions; at several points the nation considered dissolving into a City State of Redwood.

Constitutional reform in 2013 produced the Noble Republic of Lurk, modelled on an adapted version of the 1920 Czechoslovak constitution with direct democracy provisions added. Lurk made contact with the Czech micronational community in January 2014 and quickly became one of the founding members of what would become the Union of Micronations of Central Europe.

After the Coronese Confederation period (2015) and a brief attachment to Mercia in 2019, Lurk joined Mekniy at the Summit at Redwood in 2021.

Government

Lurk is represented at the federal level through the Kaae position (currently Rāvenssae Kxaiji), and retains two federal states: the State of Lurk (LR) and the State of Loringia (LG), alongside the Lurkish cities of Redwood and Ravensburg and the Lurkish Antarctic Zone.

Contributions to the Community

Lurk founded the Czech MicroWiki (initially on Wikia) and ran the first Czech micronational discussions on Skype, later moving them to Discord. It set the Czech standard for formal diplomatic documentation through its tradition of lengthy mutual-relations treaties. Lurk also co-developed MPTA and several other pieces of shared infrastructure through its companies Aerosoft and APSILAB.
